Digital dental X-rays are images of the teeth, surrounding soft tissues, and surrounding bones that are used to look for and help diagnose disorders with the mouth, teeth, and jaw. X-ray images can reveal things that a visual examination cannot, such as hidden dental structures (such as wisdom teeth), malignant or benign tumors, cavities, and bone loss. The radiographic evaluation of the dental and periodontal tissues is a crucial component of the comprehensive oral examination since it is possible for both tooth decay and periodontal disease to be missed during a clinical exam. A radiographic image is created by a controlled burst of X-ray radiation that, according to the anatomical density of the oral structures, enters them at variable depths before hitting the digital sensor. Teeth look lighter because less radiation passes through them and gets to the film. Because X-rays can easily pass through these less solid components, dental cavities, infections, and other changes in bone density and the periodontal ligament look darker.
